Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th of April, 1972. As an only girl She was also raised through her maternal grandparents. Scott graduated from her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Then she enrolled in Temple University. Scott studied secondary school education while also working at two jobs. She was hoping to be an English teacher at high school. The dream however was put on hold when after 3 years of studies and as a teachers aide she dropped out of the college. A poet by trade started performing, she was able to perform at live poetry recitals. Then she joined along with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to create a group. You Got Me, their collaborative song was written by them. She came out during a Roots performance. Afterwards she was able to negotiate collaborations with people like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. Additionally, she gained experience as a performer in her participation in the Canada stage of the Broadway musical Rent. She became the first signed artist for label Hidden Beach Recordings label.
